Officials in Iran have reported the country’s air defenses destroyed multiple objects operating in its airspace early on Friday morning, amid simmering tensions with Israel.
Iranian Major General Seyyed Abdulrahim Mousavi told the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that explosions heard near Isfahan were from Iranian air defense interceptions. He said no targets were hit on the ground and the situation in the Iranian city has returned to normal.
Mousavi said the 8th Shikari base of Isfahan participated in the air defense effort.
Mehr News Agency also reported air defenses shot down three micro air vehicles, possibly drones, near Isfahan. Mehr News Agency further reported air defense activity in Tabriz.
The exact reason for this air defense activity is not entirely clear.
ABC News, citing unidentified U.S. military officials, reported Israeli forces launched missiles at Iran. The U.S. officials reported those missiles struck an Iranian target, but did not elaborate.
The Israeli military has yet to claim responsibility for any of the explosions reported around Iran, and the Iranian side hasn’t blamed them.
The explosions come just days after Iran launched a barrage of drones and missiles at Israel. U.S. and Israeli forces intercepted a majority of the drones and missiles that targeted Israel. Other missiles appear to have inflicted only minor damage on a pair of Israeli military bases.
That April 13 Iranian barrage was, itself, retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike that hit Iran’s embassy compound in Syria on April 1, killing multiple Iranian military officers and at least two civilians.
Israeli officials had indicated they’d respond to the Iranian barrage, despite urgings from international allies to de-escalate.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi warned this week that Iran would have a โfierce responseโ if Israeli forces attacked its territories or interests. For now, the Iranian government’s response remains subdued. Reuters reported a senior Iranian official said there are no plans to strike back at this time.
