Israeli officials believe they have recovered the bodies of three hostages held in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
In a press statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) identified the three recovered hostages as Shani Louk, Amit Buskila, and Yitzhak Gelernter.
The IDF assessed all three individuals were in attendance at the Nova Music Festival, which was taking place when Hamas gunmen and other Palestinian militants breached the Gaza-Israel barrier. The music festival was taking place near Re’im, an Israeli community located about four miles from the Gaza perimeter, when the attack began.
The IDF said Israeli intelligence assessments concluded Louk, Buskila, and Gelernter were likely killed during the attack on Oct. 7 and that Palestinian militants took their bodies back to the Gaza Strip along with other hostages.
IDF Rear Adml. Daniel Hagari said members of the Israeli military and Israel’s Shin Bet security service recovered the bodies of the three hostages during an overnight operation.
Hagari said Israeli medical examiners proceeded to examine the three bodies for identification purposes and that officials have since notified the families of the three hostages.
“Our hearts go out to them, to the families, at this difficult time,” Hagari said. “We will leave no stone unturned we will do everything in our power to find our hostages and bring them home we will not rest until we do.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared his condolences for the families of the deceased hostages on Friday afternoon.
“This terrible loss is heart-breaking. My wife Sara and I grieve with the families; all of our hearts are with them in their hour of heavy sorrow,” Netanyahu said.
“We will return all of our hostages, the living and the deceased alike,” the Israeli Prime Minister continued. “I commend our brave forces whose determined action has returned the sons and daughters to their own border.”
According to Israeli social security data shared with Agence France-Presse, some 1,139 people were killed in the Oct. 7 attack, including 695 Israeli civilians, 373 individuals working with the Israeli security forces, and 71 foreign nationals.ย Hamas gunmen and other Palestinian militants took around 250 others hostage.
Efforts to win the release of the hostages have played a major factor in ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in the ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas released 105 of the hostages in November, in exchange for a temporary pause in the fighting and the release of 240 Palestinians who have been held in Israeli custody. Some Palestinians are held in Israeli custody without being formally charged.
Israeli forces have also recovered several hostages by forces, including two they recovered in a rescue operation in the southern Gazan city of Rafah in February.
Israeli troops mistakenly shot and killed three more Israeli hostages during combat operations in northern Gaza in December.
Hamas has claimed Israeli forces have mistakenly killed other hostages in the course of their military operations across the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu has set a wartime goal to destroy Hamas entirely and recover all hostages held in the Gaza Strip. As such, Israeli negotiators have been willing to offer only temporary pauses in the fighting, in exchange for Hamas to release hostages. Hamas negotiators, by contrast, have offered to eventually release all hostages if Israeli forces agree to a permanent ceasefire, withdraw entirely from the Gaza Strip, and lift controls over imports into the territory.
