Republican Texas congressional candidate and firearms YouTuber Brandon Herrera jabbed at his primary opponent, Rep. Tony Gonzales, by intentionally editing a recent CNN interview Gonzales did to make the Congressman appear to admit to inappropriate sexual acts with minors and being a Nazi.

Gonzales recently referred to Herrera as a “known neo-Nazi.” The Gonzales campaign also cut a new ad in which they took a segment of a conversation Herrera had about military veteran culture and veteran suicide and suggested Herrera doesn’t treat the issue of veteran suicide seriously enough.

The Gonzales campaign ad specifically included a clip of Herrera stating, “If it makes everybody in the room feel better. I often think about putting a gun in my mouth. So I’m basically an honorary veteran.”

Herrera has insisted Gonzales and his campaign have heavily misrepresented and de-contextualized Herrera’s comments to advance the allegations he’s a neo-Nazi or doesn’t care for veterans.

The aforementioned soundbite Herrera made about putting a gun in his mouth was taken from a conversation he had with multiple military veterans. Herrera explained before and after the comment that he was reflecting on a dark sense of humor from veteran friends and family members in his life and said his comment about putting a gun in his mouth was a joke, and one that his veteran friends had laughed at.

Several of Gonzales’ X social media posts promoting the claims against his primary opponent have been appended with X’s Community Notes tags, indicating the content of his posts are missing important context.

Now, after criticizing Gonzales for taking him out of context, Herrera has mockingly returned the favor by cutting Gonzales’ CNN interview clip.

“Since @TonyGonzales4TX has been taking me out of context this entire campaign, only fair he gets a taste of his own medicine,” Herrera wrote in a Thursday X post, along with a laughing emoji.

The clip is cut in such a way that it appears Gonzales is saying, “Look, I paid minors to have sex with me, I’m a known neo-Nazi. I used to walk around with white hoods on at night, now I walk around with white hoods on during the day. I served 20 years in the military, but I served with some real scumbags.”
