At least nine Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon on Wednesday Oct. 2, as Hezbollah reported a pair of ambush attacks.

Hezbollah forces claimed to have killed and wounded several Israeli troops in two separate ambushes. Hezbollah said one such ambush began as Israeli forces entered the southern Lebanese border community of Odaisseh. The Lebanese paramilitary force said they launched another ambush attack further to the southwest, near the border town of Maroun Al-Ras.

Hours after the Hezbollah claimed its ambushes, the Israeli military acknowledged several of its troops were killed in fighting in southern Lebanon.

Among the Israeli casualties were Majs. Noam Barzilay, Or Mantzur, and Nazar Itkin; Cpts. Eitan Yitzhak Oster, Harel Etinger, and Itai Ariel Giat; Sgt. Ido Broyer; and another soldier named Makarit Ata.

Broyer was assigned to Israel’s Golani Brigade.

Giat was assigned to Israel’s Yahalom combat engineering unit.

Oster, Etinger, Barzilay, Mantzur, Itkin, and Ata were members of Israel’s Sayeret Egoz commando unit; which specializes in anti-guerilla warfare operations.

Hours before confirming Oster’s death, the Israeli military reported Egoz troops had located and destroyed a Hezbollah weapons stash including rocket launchers and other weapons.

The day after the ambushes, the Israeli military reported Capt. Ben Zion Falah, of Israel’s 202nd Battalion, Parachute Brigade, also fell in battle in southern Lebanon on Oct. 2.

Hezbollah claimed they wounded and killed dozens more Israeli troops during their ambush operations on Wednesday, but exact casualty figures cannot be immediately verified.

The Israeli military has not responded to a request for comment concerning the casualties in southern Lebanon on Wednesday.

The Israeli military reported their ground forces first entered southern Israel on Sept. 30.

Israel’s incursion into Lebanon is targeting Hezbollah; a political faction and paramilitary force within Lebanese society, designated as a terrorist group by the United States, Israel, and several other nations.

Hezbollah formed in the 1980s, after Israeli forces invaded Lebanon in 1982.
